That's right! Improve your ergonomic experience in Windows for you! Read on...

.·. unknown types launch Notepad .·.

This basically means that when you double click on a file in Explorer which isn't registered in the Registry (has the icon shown on the right), it will open in Notepad.

There are two ways to go about this, you can download my .REG file, that does the task for you, or you can do it manually. If you don't know what the Registry is and have never used regedit, download the file!, now double click the file and press Yes when asked if you are sure.

Manually takes longer and I take no responsibility for muck ups, although I can't see how you can do any serious damage if you are careful. See the screenshot below? Expand the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and head down to the Unknown key. Create the sequence of keys shown below starting with View, in the Shell key make the default value "View", in the "View" key type "View As &Ascii;", or whatever you want. In command make the default key as shown in the screenshot. Exit and all's done!

Another advantage to this tweak is pushing Shift-Enter on any file type will launch Notepad with that filetype. Yes! Any file type, even .EXE files .COM files .SYS files. I find this very useful for HTML editing since I use Explorer and Notepad to create sites, so I find the .HTML file, push Enter to view and Shift-Enter to edit. Smart.

.·. dynamic Control Panel folder .·.

I dunno how I survived without this one. Create a new folder in C:\WINDOWS\START MENU\ and name it the following:

Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Push Enter and there you have it! Click on Start and you have an expandable Control Panel that will save you many a mouse click.

.·. smart keyboard shortcuts .·.

  • Win-E

    Launch Explorer, can even be used to break through certain "Windows security" barriers!

  • Win-BREAK

    Show System properties.

  • Shift-ENTER

    Holding shift and right-clicking items in explorer shows the Unknown-Type popup menu. Shift-ENTER will execute the default function in this menu, usually Open As.. .
