Video Games and Violent Crime

People often claim that it is typical for people to latch onto the latest youth craze and accuse it of causing crime. People did it with Rock and Roll music. They did it with cinema. They even did it with Jazz music! The latest craze is of course video games.

But video games are different, some of them actually involve acting out violence on people.

So this article is an interesting rebutal.

If you didn’t read the article, it shows that violent crime among young people is the lowest it has been in 40 years. At least in the US.

My opinion is that violent people are drawn to violent media. I love video games, violent ones as much as non-violent ones. I think men are violent by nature, most of us are only violent in reality when forced into the situation, almost always as an act of self-defense, or to defend those important to us. This intrinsic violence makes us keen to watch action films, read horror stories and play Resident Evil. In fact I’d argue a knowledge of violence is necessary if you want to be a balanced individual. It is also important to know when to use violence, and this kind of lesson comes with experience, and probably teaching from your parents.
