The High-fat, High-protein Diet!

Rather interestingly, a study has found that the high-fat low-carbohydrate Atkins diet is more effective than a conventinal low-fat high-carbohydrate diet! The study appears sound, and was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (not online unfortunately so no peer-review here).

I recall that the body braces itself for starvation when you diet usually so you lose less weight than you’d like, but this is still a surprise. What do you think Steph?

  1. Yes Max you are right. If you starve yourself then the body thinks it is being starved and the metabolism slows down in order the conserve energy. The Atkins diet seems to work and this goes against all the things we know about good, sensible eating and nutrition. However, the BBC "diet trials", conducted over 6 months showed that dieter on this regime did not suffer from and decifencies or excesses of vitamins or cholesterole as one might have expected AND they all lost weight and it seems to stay off. Perhaps nutricianists don’t know everything!

  2. Here in Canada we find the Tim Hortons diet in particular is very effective for sustaining ones daily energy requirements. In particular, the "Blueberry Donut" called Fritter expells all hunger up to 2 hours. Coupled with a mug of "Double Double" coffee (that’s double cream and double sugar for those of you who don’t know), can transform your figure in no time at all from "fit and healthy" to "couch potato" in less that 4 weeks.

    Welcome to Canada, eh!

  3. Oh Tim Hortons! How I miss you! I’m so fed up being "fit and healthy"! I need more coffee donuts and excess sugar in my life. We just have nothing like that here in the UK :-(
I must visit again soon, not that I need an excuse, but Tim Hortons is extremely tempting!
