Codeine 1.0.1

I release Codeine 1.0.1, my simple, (hopefully) usable video player.

I hope to release more frequently from now on. And also finally get Filelight 1.0 out. It’s nice to be releasing software on Linux again. :)

I confess I was partially motivated by me going to Florence for the weekend. I’ve developed an odd fear of flying over the last year. I hated the idea of something happening to me and Codeine still being stuck at 1.0. Dedication eh? ;)

Full changelog at the kde-apps entry.

Comments on Codeine, its design, etc. and requests for its future are welcome.

On an unrelated note, watch this. I’m so getting a Wii when they come out! But I also want a PS3 for Heavenly Sword, but who will be able to afford a PS3? I spose I could move to a smaller place..

  1. I’ve long loved Quicktime version 3 (Pro, has the features and very little clutter). Can you make it so that that the codeline toolbar can be placed at the bottom, have a timeline and a really small play button? (And maybe a popup for the volume control?) Nice idea but keeping it simple but very useful could be more challenging than you think.

  2. Volume control: check (configure toolbar)
Toolbar at bottom: check (just move it )
Really small play button: well, if you set KDE to have small toolbar buttons.

Timeline, planned for a version in future.

But I haven’t used Quicktime 3, so I can’t really say if I’ll emulate, nor want to emulate it properly.

  3. I love Codeine. I was really upset with Caffeine, which I thought looked great when I started using it a couple of years ago, but very little has happened to it. It still crashes and hangs way to much and the features it has are well hidden. Codeine gav me what I wanted. loving it since the first time I tried it.
Some things that would be nice, however: Media information. I am seriously lacking a button where a dialog will pop up and tell me what codecs my mediafile is coded with, how long it is, yada yada, and so on. It would be really great to troubleshoot when you’re missing codecs. I would also appreciate some of the xine-engine options to be made simpler to set for the average user. Simple stuff, like changing size/font/colour of a subtitle or something simple like that.
A simple playlist would also be nice. Not like VLCs playlist though, I dont like the idea of a separate windows playlist; I would want it more to be like XMMS or Winamps playlists: connected to the main interface.

    Keep up the good work!

  5. I agree with Jeff in all of his points, though I think that you should be REALLY careful if you implement a playlist. This will be a VERY tricky task to do!
Something else I’d love to see is the ability to include codeine as a plugin into konqueror. Just because it’s so stable. Kaffeine crashes my konqueror every single time, even though running the file externally works absolutely fine.
And last but not least, an “open url” button would be nice, even if only in the menu and not on the welcome dialog. It is actually the button I use most often (though ironically only in video players).

  6. Thanks Max, looks good.

Thomas asked for “open url” but when you add that it is best to use the lable “Open Location” and avoid the acronyms (my excuse is usability but for those who like to be techincally correct it could include various URI types beyond web URLs so using Location is more accurate).

  7. I love filelight and still use it (altough it crashes every time you close it, at least as a kioslave). Please update it, and would be very nice if it was included in the kde extras, it’s VERY useful indeed.

    Thanks for the work =)

  9. Houps, I forgot to send a mail to you. I made a translation in French of the 1.0 here : http://lezardbreton.free.fr/codeine/
I will try to update it this evening to match 1.0.1.

  10. I got a patch for the crash on exit bug, I’ll apply it as soon as I next sit down to write some code.

Thanks for the translation Lezard :)
